Optimization of electrocoagulation process parameters for enhancing phosphate removal in a biofilm-electrocoagulation system

Abstract This study aimed to enhance the removal of phosphate in synthetic rural sewage by using a continuous electrocoagulation (EC) combined with biofilm process an integrated system. Characteristic indexes effluent covering pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), suspended solids (SS), chemical demand (COD) and maintained narrow fluctuation range tended not readily influence subsequent electrocoagulation. Three parameters including inter-electrode distance, current intensity reaction time were selected investigate performance enhancing removal. On strength single-factor tests, Box-Behnken design (BBD) coupled response surface methodology (RSM) was applied individual mutual interaction impacts major operating optimize conditions. The optimum conditions found be distance 1.8 cm, density 2.1 mA/cm2 EC 34 min, efficiency 90.24% achieved along less than 1 mg/L case periodic polarity switching mode, which raised 10.10% reduced cost 0.13 CNY/g PO4− compared non-switching mode. combination processing treatment proven valid feasible method for
